The environmental impact of aviation is of crucial importance to the aviation industry and to us. That is why we constantly strive to reduce the negative environmental impact of the airport. We participate in the Green Airport project in parallel with our own environmental work and you can of course climate compensate your flight.
Some of the measures we are working on are:
- Assess and manage environmental risks in a systematic manner
- Reduce our resource consumption (paper, energy and other waste)
- We use hot water breathing instead of hazardous substances when the runway is slippery.
- We comply with our environmental permit, applicable environmental legislation and other applicable national and international rules and requirements.
- Make our operations more energy efficient and steer operations towards sustainable use of resources
- The goal is for all our staff to be trained and involved in the company's environmental work.
Green Airport
Hemavan Tärnaby Airport is, together with Sweden's regional airports, part of the "green airport" project. The project aims to make all airports more efficient, automated and, above all, greener - simply kinder to the environment and more economically sustainable!
In the video clip below you can see some of the target images for the airports of the future. Would you like to read more about each individual target? Click here
The path to a green aviation industry requires a transformation of aviation, not cancelled flights. Aviation is and will always be important for a functioning Sweden and for us who live in society. Of course, we will want to visit relatives and friends who live far away in the future, and we believe in a future with environmentally friendly air travel!

How does our airport contribute?
What are we doing at Hemavan Tärnaby Airport to work towards these goals and be part of the "green airport" project?
We began by mapping our local CO2 emissions and energy consumption in 2018 according to ACERT (Airport Carbon Emissions Report). Based on that result, we set the following goals for 2019–2021:
- to reduce energy use at the airport
- to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from own consumption by 20%
- to reduce the amount of unsorted waste by 5%
We have had two years of pandemic with greatly reduced operations which has meant that we have far exceeded the targets until 2021. Switching from diesel to HVO100 (Biodiesel) has meant a 79% reduction in CO2 from our own fleet. Now that flying is returning to a more normal level, the goal is to be at the same level as 2021 despite increased operations.
The airport's goal is to be CO2 neutral by 2030. If we continue to reduce our emissions at the same rate we have done so far, we hope to achieve this goal earlier than 2030!
